According to a 2007 hospital study conducted by the American College of Chest Physicians, hospitalized smokers who participated in a single hypnotherapy session were more likely to still be nonsmokers after 6 months, compared to patients who used nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or quit cold turkey without hypnosis.
The study was conducted by Dr. Faysal Hasan at Massachusetts General Hospital and the North Shore Medical Center, where 67 smoking patients who expressed a desire to stop smoking were given options and assistance with their chosen method of cessation. One group of patients quit cold turkey, another group was given NRT, a third group received hypnotherapy, and the fourth group received hypnotherapy and NRT.
Six months later, less than 16% of the NRT group were still smoke free, while 50% of all patients who used hypnotherapy (with or without NRT) were still nonsmokers.
