NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO (NPR) — Public health researchers at the University of Sydney have found 107 apps on iPhones and Androids with pro-smoking messages, including so-called smoking simulators. Many of the apps are free to download and target children or teens by using cartoons, games and celebrities The iPhone app Electronic Smoke simulates smoking by detecting sound waves. When you breathe into the microphone, the virtual cigarette burns. The researchers, who describe the apps this week in the journal Tobacco Control, say these games violate the World Health Organization’s bans on smoking advertisements. They call for more regulation of the apps’ content and distribution. It has been clear for a while that cigarette ads have a dramatic effect on kids. So much so, that tobacco companies are forbidden from advertising directly to them. In the U.S., the tobacco industry can’t sponsor sports teams, give away t-shirts or even advertise on TV. But now it looks like tobacco companies have found a loophole in these regulations through the smartphone apps. Read the entire article from NPR:

In the past eight years I’ve worked with over 2500 smokers, most of them tell me that they’ve tried nicotine gum or lozenges or patches in the past, with no lasting results. That’s because NRT is an unhelpful and unnecessary stall tactic when aiming to eliminate physical dependance, and it is completely counterproductive when aiming to extinguish drug-reinforced behavior patterns. I’ve had clients who haven’t smoked cigarettes in years, still struggling to kick the nicotine gum habit. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/10/health/study-finds-nicotine-gum-and-patches-dont-help-smokers-quit.html

By Associated Press, Published: February 15PENSACOLA, Fla. — A Florida man trying to kick the smoking habit was puffing on an electronic cigarette when a faulty battery caused it to explode in his mouth, taking out some of his front teeth and a chunk of his tongue and severely burning his face, fire officials said Wednesday. “The best analogy is like it was trying to hold a bottle rocket in your mouth when it went off,” said Joseph Parker, division chief for the North Bay Fire Department. “The battery flew out of the tube and set the closet on fire.” Read the Full Story…

Thursday, January 5, 2012 By Amy Norton NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The electronic cigarettes marketed as a safer alternative to the real thing produce immediate changes in users’ airways, a small study suggests. Researchers in Greece saw changes in the lung function of healthy smokers who puffed on an e-cigarette for just five minutes — although it’s not clear what the long-term result of those responses might be in regular e-cigarette users, the team reports in the journal Chest.
(CNN) — A study published Monday in a Canadian journal concluded that smokers who take Chantix, one of the most popular smoking cessation drugs, could increase their risk of heart problems. Chantix (varenicline) could raise the risk of heart attacks and irregular heartbeats, said one of the study authors, Dr. Sonal Singh, an assistant professor of general internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The heart problems are the latest in a growing list of concerns raised by patient reports, lawsuits and studies since the drug’s approval in 2006. The drug could cause changes in behavior, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts or actions, according to its warning label. Chantix carries a boxed warning — the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s most restrictive safety labeling — because of the risk of psychological events. Chantix has been banned by the Federal Aviation Administration for pilots and air-traffic controllers because it may cause loss of consciousness and blackouts. Truck and bus drivers are also not allowed to take the drug. In the study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers examined data from clinical trials involving 8,216 healthy people who received either Chantix or a placebo. Taking Chantix [...]

By Robert Preidt WEDNESDAY, June 29 (HealthDay News) — Motivational text messages more than double the odds that smokers will be able to kick the habit, new research suggests. The study included 5,800 smokers in the United Kingdom who wanted to quit and were assigned to either a group who received motivational text messages (2,915 participants) or a control group who received non-motivational text messages (2,885 participants). The motivational messages sent to those in the so-called txt2stop group included encouragement, help dealing with cravings, and advice on preventing weight gain while quitting smoking. For example, the message about cravings said: “Cravings last less than 5 minutes on average. To help distract yourself, try sipping a drink slowly until the craving is over.” The non-motivational messages said things not connected to the study, such as thanking people for taking part or asking for confirmation of contact details, according to the report published online June 29 in The Lancet. The participants’ saliva was tested to verify quit rates. Those who received motivational messages were more than twice as likely to quit as those in the control group — 10.7 percent versus 4.9 percent. The findings suggest that motivational texting should be added [...]

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today issued warning letters to five electronic cigarette distributors for various violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) including unsubstantiated claims and poor manufacturing practices. Also today, in a letter to the Electronic Cigarette Association, FDA said the agency intends to regulate electronic cigarette and related products in a manner consistent with its mission of protecting the public health. The letter outlines the regulatory pathway for marketing drug products in compliance with the FDCA. For a drug product to gain FDA approval, a company must demonstrate to the agency that the product is safe and effective for its intended use. The company must also demonstrate that manufacturing methods are adequate to preserve the strength, quality and purity of the product. “FDA invites electronic cigarette firms to work in cooperation with the agency toward the goal of assuring that electronic cigarettes sold in the United States are lawfully marketed,” the letter to the association read. FDA has determined that the electronic cigarette products addressed in the warning letters to the distributors, and similar products, are subject to FDA regulation as drugs. Under the FDCA, a company cannot claim that its drug can [...]
